Reconciliation

Reconciliation is a vital generational challenge for any Canadian community or government. In my first term, we began to take concrete steps to strengthen and promote the City’s relationship with the urban Indigenous community. A major milestone was the City’s 2020 Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. We led the province in our 2018 decision to discontinue “Discovery Day”, a motion aligned with the TRC Recommendation 47 that I brought forward after listening to community members. We implemented land acknowledgements before each Council meeting. We have started work to make anti-racism a priority across City programs.

  • I support implementing the 2020 Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
  • I will continue to sit on the Partnership Table for First Voice, the Urban Indigenous Coalition
  • I will work to implement the forthcoming Community Action Plan.
  • I will promote the Calls to Action in the Truth and Reconciliation Report, the Calls for Justice of the MMIWG report, and UNDRIP.
